The AIM-9M Sidewinder is an American-built short-range heat-seeking missile that entered service in its first AIM-9M-1 iteration in 1982. Although being superseded in USAF service by the AIM-9X, the -9M is still in service in large numbers, and quantities estimated at up to four hundred were transferred to militia units in the opening stages of the Second American Civil War.
